People misuse terms all the time. Radfems misuse the term "systemic racism" to claim that white people are inherently racist. Conservatards misuse the term "woke" to claim that LGBT people are to blame for wokeness. Lolberts misuse the term "socialism" to claim that socialism is state ownership and welfare. for example i talked to a guy who kept calling kamala harris a communist. i decided not to be a douche and figure out what he actually meant. his point was just that kamala and the other "communists" in the government are bureaucrats. for him "communism" simply meant a bureaucratic state. obviously this isnt the correct definition, but isn't there a kernel of truth here too? would it be right for me to just chastise him and say "oh you're falling for the propaganda"?

Yes and no. In a casual conversation, no. But if we're talking about wanting to educate that person in what socialism means we can't just substitute the word due to how many socialist literature already uses that word.
