holy fuck. And to think I've been holding off upgrading for years. I'll be stuck with this 10 year old box until it croaks won't I?

GPUs are still unobtainium with drops getting quickly bought up.

Am I the only retard in /leftypol/ that actually has and enjoys cryptocurrencies?
>>

 No.8265

If cryptocurrency is such a threat to governments, why haven't they banned it yet?
>>

 No.8266

>>8265
Neo-liberals goverment don't have economic planners anymore, the idea is that you don't need them and the economy just runs itself and when it doesn't the goverment just have to throw money at it. The goverment was blindsided by crypto mining taking up all the semiconductors output and this causing industries downstream to starve for inputs.

Do you have to mine crypto to make enough money to buy computer hardware now ? Is this becoming a new destructive feature of capitalism, like when they destroyed new cars that came fresh from the assembly line during the great recession.

I don't thinking workstations can reliability earn enough to pay for themselves with how ridiculously OP mining rings are (as you are in professional render farm territory) and how the more processing power mining crypto, the harder the hash gets for everyone.
>>

 No.8315

>>8312
how many render farms do you need until they pay for a workstation ?
Like what is the ratio, do you have to run 50 computers to be able to use one ?
How does the energy efficiency compare to computers from the nineties if you account for the "crypto overhead"

Well if you look at the picture above, the mining rig is running ten RTX 3060ti and a 3090 is not even double the power of a single 3060ti so this mining rig will still have around ten times the GPU power of the beefiest PC rig. This is the kind of setup you are going be going up against from professional miners that can have entire racks of these things. Professional miners also have less trouble acquiring GPUs since they buy them by the pallet thus can order from distributors directly.

Computers from the 90s used less wattage but were less efficient in processing power per watt.

Upside: this might be a blow to Big Data because the trend of storage becoming cheaper is reversing.

We're in for a huge crypto crash. Coworkers and family members have asked me to get them into crypto recently, and anyone who knows anything about investments knows that omen.

I enjoy one cryptocurrency, and that one is Monero. I hope all of the other ones crash or get regulated to hell.
>>8265
They are no longer a threat to governments since tech companies and large financial institutions have begun to co-opt them.

You can already grab one of the latest Ryzen off Aliexpress for cheap.
Remember that TF2 is so badly optimized it's completely single-core CPU bound.
