South Africa's white Afrikaner separatists want Trump's help to become state
Three senior Orania officials interviewed by Reuters were vague about the help they sought in the U.S. They said they were not seeking handouts but wanted investment to build houses to keep up with its 15% population growth, infrastructure and energy independence that it has almost half-achieved with solar.

Guinea Sets Date for Constitutional Referendum Amid Political Tensions
General Mamadi Doumbouya, the junta leader, had previously declared 2025 as a “crucial electoral year” for returning to constitutional order but failed to provide a clear timeline. The missed December 31, 2024 deadline for launching the democratic transition led to widespread anger, with protests bringing the capital, Conakry, to a standstill.

“Let me be very clear that the pay of these workers is being cut by a Labour council under your watch,” Ms Graham said. “The current escalation increasingly looks like a declaration of war on these workers.”

Chileans Hold a National Strike

Luisa González reaches historic agreement with the Indigenous movement for the presidential elections
In the first round of the elections, PK ran Leonidas Iza as its presidential candidate, and reached third place with a little more than 5% of the vote. There are several aspects that differentiate González from Iza. The former has assumed a position closer to a very cautious social democracy in alliance with business sectors. Iza, on the other hand, proposed a popular government closer to the positions of the classical left.

CPI (Maoist) CC Sets Terms For Peace Talks With Central And State Governments
The Communist Party of India (Maoist) Central Committee has allegedly expressed its readiness for peace talks with the Central and State governments if they stop the ongoing ‘Operation Kagaar’, what the Maoist party termed as genocide, in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, and a halt to the setting up of new camps by the security forces as part of the ‘military offensive’.

Pentagon officials urge a faster militarisation of space, citing China’s advances
“We are critically underfunded in the execution of our newest and most critical mission: space control. We need capabilities both to defeat adversary counters-pace weapons as well as to deny, degrade, or destroy adversary space power.” Saltzman was not the only Pentagon official testifying on Thursday about a need for Washington to view space as a military domain.

US banks predict climate goals will fail – but air conditioning firms will thrive
“We now expect a 3C world,” states a March analysis by Morgan Stanley. This level of global heating above preindustrial times is well beyond the 2C limit agreed to by governments and would lead to catastrophic heatwaves, floods, economic strife and other upheavals. The Morgan Stanley investor research forecasts, though, that multiplying heatwaves will provide a windfall for companies that provide air conditioning, and that the global market could grow by 41% to be worth $331bn by the end of this decade.

Senate—Again—Rejects Sanders' Effort to Block US Arms to Israel
As he did during the Biden administration, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday forced votes on resolutions that would block some U.S. arms sales to Israel as it wages a devastating war on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip—and as they did last November, the vast majority of his Senate colleagues from both major political parties blocked the bills.

Mehmet Oz confirmed by US Senate to lead Medicare and Medicaid
During a hearing last month, he told senators that he did favor work requirements for Medicaid recipients, but that paperwork shouldn’t be used to reaffirm that they are working or to block people from staying enrolled.

Republicans moving ahead with Trump’s ‘big’ bill of tax breaks and spending cuts amid tariff uproar
Fundamental to the Senate package is making sure Trump’s first-term tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of the year, are continued and made a permanent fixture of the tax code. The senators also will consider adding Trump’s proposed tax cuts on tipped wages, Social Security income and others.

On “Liberation Day,” Trump Signed America Up for Stagflation
While the methodology seems to be bogus, the economic consequences of the measures, set to come into effect on April 5 and 9 for the baseline and reciprocal tariffs, respectively, are very real. By all accounts, they portend a massive stagflationary shock, that is an inflationary surge in concert with a blow to economic activity, both via higher import prices and their effect on consumption and production within the United States. The Federal Reserve’s eventual response would only add to this picture. Trump claimed that the new tariffs will “ultimately bring down prices for consumers.” But the operative word here is “ultimately.” By any account, the immediate burden will be borne by American households, already struggling with high debt and rising living costs. The market for consumer goods, due to its exposure to the process of global trade integration, had long provided a deflationary reprieve to consumers who faced steep inflation in services like education and health care, and in non-tradable goods like housing and restaurant food.

Die Linke and War Credits
In the Bundestag, Die Linke voted against the constitutional amendments. Yet in the Bundesrat, where CDU, SPD, and Greens do not hold two thirds of seats, Die Linke voted in favor. The Left Party has ministers in the coalition governments in Bremen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and they could have forced these governments to abstain. This is exactly what the hypo-neoliberal FDP and the social-chauvinist BSW did in their state governments. Yet these “left” ministers argued that since the military spending was coupled with a one-time fund of 500 billion euros for infrastructure, they needed to vote in favor. This is an open betrayal of Die Linke’s program, principles, and structures, but it will have no consequences. Some members of the youth organization have demanded that the ministers resign. But party co-chair Inés Schwedtner, lead candidate Heidi Reichinnek, and other leaders replied that this difference of opinion should only be discussed internally. In an interview with the German edition of Jacobin, Reichinnek said: “We always get attacked for supposedly not supporting the Bundeswehr,” the German army. “That is total nonsense. Of course we want the Bundeswehr to be well armed as a defensive army.”

A political tragedy: Myanmar’s earthquake and the junta
It is clear to many that this is not simply a natural disaster, but a political tragedy. The power of the earthquake would be devastating for any country, but in Myanmar, one of the world’s poorest countries, which has played host to multiple ongoing civil wars, the event has highlighted the poor state of infrastructure and a military government seemingly intent on putting itself before the lives of citizens. Htuu Lou Rae, co-founder of Doa-A-Yae, a coalition of Burmese democracy activists and human rights groups, told me that “the junta has a rent-seeking approach to aid which has prioritised Naypyidaw, the centre of junta power, and marginalised communities considered as symbolic threats such as Muslim communities, as well as civilian populations in rebel-controlled areas and political prisoners.”
