As Ethiopia and Israel forge closer water cooperation, alarm bells ring in Egypt
It is also the latest in a series of cooperation agreements between Addis Ababa and Tel Aviv over the years, ones that do not make Egyptian observers exclude their expected negative toll on their country, especially with Egypt and Ethiopia locking horns over the Horn of Africa state's construction of a gigantic dam on the Blue Nile, the main tributary of the Nile River, Egypt's principal source of fresh water, and historical and current tensions between Egypt and Israel.

A coffee for $3.50: Argentina is the most expensive country in Latin America
The immediate consequence of the rise in prices in dollars is that the upper and middle classes use credit cards to buy everything they can online from overseas, now that Milei has reduced tariffs and facilitated the entry of products from abroad. The beaches of Brazil and Uruguay were crowded with Argentines last summer, fleeing the prices of the resorts in their own country; there were also long lines at immigration points in Chile or Paraguay to go shopping at the malls on the other side of the border.

Of that overall number, hundreds of billions in Medicaid cuts may come in the form of block grants to states, caps on per capita costs, and work requirements.

While Meta framed these cuts as targeting underperforming workers, internal guidance sent last month by Hillary Champion, Meta's director of people experience, and viewed by BI, allowed managers to include employees from higher performance tiers if they couldn't meet their reduction targets from lower-rated employees alone.

AI-fuelled warfare is the terrifying reality that the tech sector refuses to discuss
As global leaders, policymakers and tech innovators convene at the AI Action Summit in Paris on Monday, a glaring omission in its agenda raises concerns: the lack of any meaningful dialogue on the militarisation of artificial intelligence (AI). This oversight is particularly alarming given recent revelations about the involvement of both Microsoft and Google in supplying the Israeli military with AI technology, which has concerning implications for human rights and international law. Reports from DropSite News, +972 Magazine and The Guardian reveal that Microsoft’s Azure platform has been used extensively by Israeli intelligence units to power surveillance systems, contributing to systematic human rights abuses. Recent revelations have also highlighted Google’s deep involvement in supplying advanced AI tools to the Israeli military as part of the $1.2bn Project Nimbus contract. During the October 2023 Gaza offensive, Google’s Vertex AI platform was reportedly deployed to process vast datasets for "predictions" where algorithms analyse behavioural patterns and metadata to identify potential threats. Proprietary Israeli military systems such as Lavender, The Gospel, and Where’s Daddy? also played a central role in the Gaza war. Lavender, an AI-powered database, reportedly flagged more than 37,000 individuals as potential assassination targets during the first weeks of the war, with operators spending as little as 20 seconds reviewing each case. Where's Daddy? tracked individuals via their smartphones, enabling precise air strikes that often targeted entire families. Such tools demonstrate how AI is being weaponised against civilian populations, raising urgent concerns about accountability and compliance with international humanitarian law.

A New Military-Industrial Complex Arises
Last April, in a move generating scant media attention, the Air Force announced that it had chosen two little-known drone manufacturers — Anduril Industries of Costa Mesa, California, and General Atomics of San Diego — to build prototype versions of its proposed Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), a future unmanned plane intended to accompany piloted aircraft on high-risk combat missions. The lack of coverage was surprising, given that the Air Force expects to acquire at least 1,000 CCAs over the coming decade at around $30 million each, making this one of the Pentagon’s costliest new projects. But consider that the least of what the media failed to note. In winning the CCA contract, Anduril and General Atomics beat out three of the country’s largest and most powerful defense contractors — Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman — posing a severe threat to the continued dominance of the existing military-industrial complex, or MIC. For decades, a handful of giant firms like those three have garnered the lion’s share of Pentagon arms contracts, producing the same planes, ships, and missiles year after year while generating huge profits for their owners. But an assortment of new firms, born in Silicon Valley or incorporating its disruptive ethos, have begun to challenge the older ones for access to lucrative Pentagon awards. In the process, something groundbreaking, though barely covered in the mainstream media, is underway: a new MIC is being born, one that potentially will have very different goals and profit-takers than the existing one. How the inevitable battles between the old and the new MICs play out can’t be foreseen, but count on one thing: they are sure to generate significant political turbulence in the years to come.
