What are your thoughts on ironic hyperpop which lampoons late capitalist consumer society and the vapidness of society in general?

its a symptom of cynicism. people satirise pop but actually really do like it but they can only live with themselves if they deny their own enthusiasm for it. surplus enjoyment. it helps to cut more against authenticity. instead of just making a song now a song has to be insecure about itself. every pleasure will soon become a guilty pleasure since it's seen as shameful to be a person these days.

That excessive autotune killed my ears.

no one called this new trend hyper pop until Spotify made a cringe playlist and now everyone acts like it’s some big phenomenon. It’s just pop music.

The people who make the music clearly just enjoy pop music but it’s marketed as quirky irony or whatever

It's intentionally ironic though.

FYI this artist is a known celebrity in Montréal. She’s a TikToker like Bella Poarch or Addison Rae.

Not so sure it's just distanced enjoyment without commitment, the way Zizek talks about cynicism.

In some of this music there's a rage at not being able to escape, being integrated and coopted no matter what you do, so you impotently lash out through self-destructive and absurd hyperconformity that is deemed abnormal and antisocial by the system itself. So there's really no enjoyment in the cynical sense, you lash out because the music itself is extremely painful to you and you can't take it anymore, what you enjoy instead is taking revenge on society by making it excessively violent - considering pop music is really a form of violence.

It's kinda similar to some aspects of Notes From the Underground, you also have a protagonist that wants to desperately escape and take revenge through self-destruction.

The problem with most of PC Music and similar shit is rather that retroactively cca 2000 pop does it much much better, it's more """hyperpop""". PC Music just can't help itself and veers into artsy fartsy cliches instead of actually driving the conformity itself to the extreme.

Machine Girl is also better IMO, although it's a different approach, it lets impotent rage pour through.

This girl needs to eat properly. She's very close to being Eugenia Cooney skinny.

maybe im dumb but i dont understand the idea of willingly becoming something you hate because you hate it that much. the reason i think they play into the genre at an ironic distance is because they like it. if they didnt like it then they would be nasty towards it or just leave it alone. no? again, i might be dumb.

Yeah it’s ironic but that’s not necessarily some big new thing, there’s been a lot of ironic pop music over the years.
