As an avid listener of metal, something that frustrates me is the prevalence of chuds and reactionaries in metal (especially black metal). The visibility of guys like Varg and Famine of Peste Noire infamy has colored the public perception of extreme metal as being the domain of edgelord fascists. What are some metal groups that could be said to be socialist, anarchist, or leftist in some manner?

To start things off, I'd highly recommend the Panopticon album "Kentucky," which is a BM album about the state's history with labor organizing among coal miners, as well as the coal industry's destruction of the state's natural beauty. It's not a perfect album by any means but the way it mixes BM with bluegrass is cool, plus it has an incredibly redpilled message.

Most metal really doesn't have an explicit political agenda, it's mostly escapism. There was a phase in the late 80s when thrash bands started to introduce more grounded themes (mostly cold war related, some ecologism too), but it was more of an identity crisis than a real movement. Punk lends itself better to sloganeering, anyway. In fact, most political themes found their to metal through hardcore punk.

Great lists so far. Pretty sure Havukruunu and Summoning have made statements that push them left of center at the least. Convulsing also did a thing against fascism but I can't really recall what he said.

Havukruunu (Moonsorrow-esque black/folk, closer to them than Agalloch but in the same wheelhouse):

Summoning (classic):

Damn Sankara is great. this is perfect, ive been trying to get into metal but ive only really been able to get into more cross genre concept stuff like Panopticon, and i was introduced to metal thru people into punk and jazz so im not really into the more glossy, goofy high fantasy viking stuff. no disrespect for it i appreciate the aesthetic, it reminds me of the goofy 90s/2000s rap aesthetic, but i like it grimier. even Burzum i do actually really like, i think i only listened to the album with the horn on the cover but i loved it, fascist shit aside

i also really fuck with Electric Wizard and Dopesmoker, if anybody has any sludgy metal recs i'd appreciate it.

Also, check out Nechochwen:

https://youtu.be/qmD0lqAAyjM?list=OLAK5uy_lO0D6o5iWRpH3_DUJ8U1v0UYprE2cF2cM

Not explicitly leftist but its an indigenous group that's explicitly anti-colonial. "Folk metal" with a lot of crisp orchestral parts which might not be for everybody but the incorporation of native flutes and drums is very cool.

Also, anybody familiar with "Rez Metal"? Apparently there's a strong metal subculture in Navajo Nation, I'm very interested but haven't been able to find much actual music out of it.

Here's a great little documentary on Rez Metal:

>The visibility of guys like Varg and Famine of Peste Noire infamy has colored the public perception of extreme metal as being the domain of edgelord fascists
Post the basis for this or fuck off. I see and have seen the view you're describing exactly fucking nowhere and doubt it to be the mainstream view of BM or extreme metal in any capacity. You see neo-nazis and liberal degenerates claiming anything as neo-nazi and this is your conclusion? Neo-nazis have claimed vaporwave, punk rock, martial industrial, neofolk among other music for themselves before. They claim any and all culture as theirs, such as vidya and anime. It's what they do and it's nothing to cuck out about.

>What are some metal groups that could be said to be socialist, anarchist, or leftist in some manner?

Black metal: Iskra, Sankara and Punaterrori are explicitly communist. 1914, Kanonenfieber, Minenwerfer and Ancst are anti-war, with Ancst being anti-capitalist if Metallum is anything to go by.

Industrial et al: probably the easiest to find leftist acts in. Militia and March of Heroes are anarchist and ML martial industrial bands respectively. Test Dept is probably most explicit in its leftism, but Die Krupps and Combichrist can probably be called such as well more often than not. Rammstein has been open about leaning to the left with Links 2 3 4.
