 No.1772

We all know that Marxists philosophy has roots in the classic European works of Hegel, Greeks etc..

So are there some works/philosophers that would be benefitial to read for Marxist from other branches of world philosophy like Chinese, Indian, African etc.?

What do you want to read? Which aspect do you want to analyse? Because it's pointless to learn philosophy without knowing history. To read eastern philosophy without knowing their history is to go into a jungle without a map and compass

It’s kind of pointless since the Europeans had a huge advantage being the birthplace of Greek philosophy and all. Hegel even said he studied Chinese and Indian philosophy and found nothing except meaningless superficiality.

For example, let examine this paper: http://www.sino-platonic.org/complete/spp211_confucius_laozi.pdf which clarified the differences between Taoism and Confucianism.
It requires the readers to know about the Huangdi-Shennong era, Yao-Shun-Yu era, Shang-Zhou era, Qin-Han era, basic knowledge on classical books of ancient China, etc. All of these knowledge, while common to Chinese scholars, is not easily accessible to Western scholars. Therefore, it's impossible to understand eastern philosophies separated from their social context, especially many of them were social philosophies.

Li Zehou’s “History of Classical Chinese Thought” is from from a Marxist (albeit also vaguely small-n nationalist) perspective and people may find it useful

I have personally found Karyn Lai’s “Introduction to Chinese Philosophy,” while not Marxist, accessible and interesting

The social context of these matters but is interesting and not at all Strange and Inscrutable to westerners really - Western philosophical revivals also tended to happen in the midst of periods of interminable interstate wars etc

This just underlines the need for the project outlined in the OP here: >>216
>We should make a general history guide for an overview on leftists history movements/people/thinkers that type of thing

 No.1783

Taoism used/use a dialectical method
>>

 No.1786

Hegel was basically importing eastern dialectics and applying a few changes.
