Why do you say they aren't as big or as good anymore? I'm guessing it's because when people first got into anime they wanted to create every possible permutation of attaching every song to every anime ever, but then the Youtube copyright strikes killed half of our work and we just gave up on that hobby. (I used to download a ton of them from "Anime music videos.com," before Youtube existed.)

Fuck copyright. It kills creativity. And fuck the big Anime conventions for commercializing every niche of the otaku culture and making AMV making feel dirty with their silly contests.

You explained it pretty well, but I'll add that AMV makers also got lazy because, rather than synching up the music to motions and scenes in anime, the just put 10 second clips of scenes and a music track over it.

Another good Russian AMV is Красная Селёдка [Naroden Genesis Evangelion] (translating as Red Herring).
It really does the Soviet industrial theme well with a lot of original animation and graphic design combined with Neon Genesis Evangelion (which is quite popular in Russia). The amount of work that went into this is very professional and contains a lot of original content within it, all matching the music quite well and, in my opinion, transferring the passion and feverous feeling of the soviet industrial passion. Very tastefully done in my opinion.

But instead, they were disciplined and mannerly (minus the whole trying to kill the MCs thing). I loved that dynamic tbh. It’s almost as if the writers took the two pairs of girls and switched their personalities.

It seems to me that non-Japanese are the biggest otaku when it comes to international athletes, at London or maybe Beijing there was another gymnast who used Zelda music for her routine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pCmxmCrg2U), and Mexican gymnast Alexa Moreno used Kimetsu no Yaiba music at the Women's Floor qualifications this year (vid related).
